An Individually Planned Curriculum supported by Key Workers
Abacus Nursery and Preschool provides a mixture of adult led and child initiated play activities which link to the Foundation Stage Curriculum.
What We Offer
A partnership of good parenting and high quality early learning provide the foundation our children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. We recognise that children learn and develop well in environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and where there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents. We know that parents hold key information about their child. You have knowledge and experience about your child’s needs and strengths, and the best way of supporting and challenging them. Together we can sensitively and skilfully support and enhance their learning.
We recognise that babies and young children need a familiar and trusted adult who will support their personal, social and emotional development. So, at Abacus we have small group sizes and all the children have a key worker - someone to help your child become familiar with the setting, and to feel safe and confident within it.
Key workers meet the needs of the children they care for, responding sensitively to their feelings, ideas and behaviour. They talk to parents to ensure that their child is being cared for in an appropriate manner for each family.
My Learning Journey
Children learn and develop well in environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents.
All the children have a “My Learning Journey” file – containing examples of their work, with photos and observations which have been carried out during their nursery day. You will be invited to meet with your child’s key worker to discuss this, along with their “My Learning Picture Summary Sheet” (a report outlining significant steps of development).
Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.
Together we will then plan your child’s “next steps” in learning, as our aim is to ensure that your little ones receive the best possible start in life.
Healthy Home Cooked Food
At meal and snack times the emphasis is on the enjoyment of our freshly prepared, healthy, home cooked food! We are proud of the variety and quality of nutritious food that we serve. Our children are encouraged to sit at the table, in small groups, with a member of staff as they would at a family meal.
We provide opportunities for the children to put out their name cards, lay the table, pour their own drinks, feed themselves and clear away their plates and cutlery. Of course, we work in partnership with parents to cater for special diets and fussy eaters! We use David Lishman Butchers so that all our meat is of top quality; with fresh fruit and vegetables and have a policy of no added salt and minimal sugar in all our cooking.
Active and Independent
We understand the importance of allowing children to choose where they learn and play, both inside and outside. Children learn best through play when they are fully engaged with ideas and activities that interest them. Therefore, we provide a mixture of planned adult initiated activities and provide an environment which is stimulating and engaging so our children can develop and progress. We encourage independence by our tailored learning programmes, the design of our building and the “can do” attitude of our childcare practitioners.
In the “big room” they can choose when to play outside and when to come indoors. Our art easel, water tray, sand, construction area, mark making, small world toys are always available, so children can play with what they know. Our children can independently enter the bathroom which is fitted with child sized toilets and low-level sinks. They can access the cloakroom, to put on or take off their own coats and help themselves to wellies for going outdoors.
The outdoor play area is easily accessible from both playrooms and our building and grounds are well maintained to provide a safe and healthy environment for all the children. Our equipment and resources are of a high standard and are regularly replaced.
Outside we have a large canopy over our playground enabling us to play outdoors, whatever the weather! We can climb, dig in the sand and ride our bikes every day. Our top garden, with tubs for planting, mini beast area, paths and bridges which lead to our pirate ship is a firm favourite with all the children!
Every child has a “My Learning Journey” file, this contains examples of their work, with photos and observations of their experiences, which have been carried out during their day at Abacus and we add your contributions from home too. You are welcome to look at this at any time and will be invited to meet with your child’s key worker so together, we can celebrate your child’s successes and plan their “next steps” in learning.
Our newsletters and information around nursery will also provide you with additional ideas about how you can engage with your child to support their learning. At the end of each day practitioners will make sure they are available to share information about your child’s day, as well as passing on any important messages to you.
